Amsterdam's North Sea climate means mild, grey, and frequently wet weather year-round. Summers are pleasant but unpredictable; winters are cold with fog and occasional ice on the canals (rare). The flat terrain and canals create wind exposure throughout the city.

Bloomington is Indiana University's home city in the Hoosier National Forest hills of south-central Indiana. The limestone karst terrain creates unique drainage patterns and the wooded hills provide more moderation than flat northern Indiana. The city sees less lake effect than northern cities but can still experience significant ice storms.
