Athens is the University of Georgia's college town in the Georgia Piedmont. Its rolling Piedmont terrain at higher elevation than coastal Georgia provides marginally more moderate summers. The Oconee River provides some cooling through town and the substantial UGA campus has significant tree cover that helps moderate urban heat.

Vienna sits in the Danube basin surrounded by the Vienna Woods and the Alps to the west, which shelter it from the worst Atlantic weather but bring cold alpine air in winter. Summers are warm and lively; winters are cold but culturally rich.
