Budapest's climate is defined by its dramatic division along the Danube: the hilly Buda side to the west and the flat Pest plain to the east create fundamentally different microclimates within a single city. The Buda Hills act as a barrier to westerly winds and generate cooler, more humid conditions on their slopes, while the open Pest side is fully exposed to continental temperature extremes.
