Cape Town has a classic Mediterranean climate but in the Southern Hemisphere — summers are December–February (hot and dry) and winters are June–August (cool and wet). The Cape Doctor (southeast wind) can make summer days dramatically windy. Table Mountain creates local weather patterns.

Chattanooga in the Tennessee River gorge is one of America's most dramatically positioned cities, surrounded by Lookout Mountain and Signal Mountain. The valley-and-ridge topography creates dramatic fog, temperature inversions, and storm channeling. The city was historically notorious for air pollution but has transformed into an outdoor recreation destination.
