Cape Town has a classic Mediterranean climate but in the Southern Hemisphere — summers are December–February (hot and dry) and winters are June–August (cool and wet). The Cape Doctor (southeast wind) can make summer days dramatically windy. Table Mountain creates local weather patterns.

Grand Forks on the Red River near the Canadian border has one of America's harshest climates. The 1997 flood devastated the downtown when the Red River set records — the entire city was evacuated. Since rebuilding, the city has created extensive flood protection while dealing with continental climate extremes as cold as -50°F in historic cold snaps.
