Cape Town has a classic Mediterranean climate but in the Southern Hemisphere — summers are December–February (hot and dry) and winters are June–August (cool and wet). The Cape Doctor (southeast wind) can make summer days dramatically windy. Table Mountain creates local weather patterns.

Hattiesburg in the longleaf pine region of south Mississippi is far enough inland to be less hurricane-vulnerable than the coast but close enough to feel tropical impacts. The University of Southern Mississippi campus dominates the cultural life and the city has a typical hot-humid Deep South climate.
