Chicago lives up to its Windy City nickname. Lake Michigan creates its own microclimate — cooler summers and heavier lake-effect snow in winter. Summers are warm but brief; winters are among the harshest of any major American city.

Olympia at the southern tip of Puget Sound is Washington's capital and the Evergreen State College's city. The South Sound position means the marine layer is somewhat weaker than central Puget Sound communities, but Olympia is still firmly Pacific Northwest with abundant rainfall and mild temperatures. The Deschutes River and Percival Cove provide water features.
