Helsinki's climate is shaped by its peninsular position jutting into the Gulf of Finland, where the Baltic Sea moderates temperatures year-round — keeping winters milder and summers cooler than inland Finland. The city's complex coastline of bays, islands, and headlands creates pronounced microclimate variation, with exposed southern shores subject to maritime winds while sheltered inland valleys trap cold air in winter. Sea ice formation in late winter can temporarily shift coastal districts toward a more continental climate until the ice breaks up in spring.
