The Moscow River and its tributaries create humidity corridors through the city, while the vast urban sprawl generates one of Europe's most pronounced urban heat islands — the city center can be 5–10°C warmer than surrounding countryside on calm winter nights. Extensive parklands, Soviet-era green belts, and elevation changes between river valleys and glacial moraine hills produce distinct microclimates across the metropolitan area.
