Hilo on the Big Island's rainy east coast is one of America's wettest cities, averaging over 130 inches of rain annually. The northeast trade winds hit Mauna Kea's massive slopes and dump enormous precipitation on the windward coast. The city overlooks Hilo Bay and is vulnerable to tsunamis — markers throughout downtown show previous inundation levels.

San Francisco's climate is shaped by its position on a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. The coastal fog (Karl the Fog) rolls in through the Golden Gate each summer afternoon, keeping temperatures mild year-round. The city has dramatically different microclimates — the Sunset District fog-bound while the Mission basks in sun on the same day.
