Desert — unique foggy grey winters, warm sunny summers, almost no rain

Lima has the world's most paradoxical coastal desert climate. Despite being a tropical latitude, it rarely gets rain due to the cold Humboldt Current offshore. Summers (December–April) are sunny and warm; winters (June–October) are blanketed in garúa — a thick grey mist with drizzle that rarely lifts.

Missoula in the Clark Fork River valley is famous for its air quality problems — winter inversions trap wood smoke and vehicle emissions in the mountain-ringed basin. The university town is surrounded by five valleys converging at this geographic pinch point, creating complex wind patterns. Fire smoke from regional wildfires is an increasing summer problem.
