Lima has the world's most paradoxical coastal desert climate. Despite being a tropical latitude, it rarely gets rain due to the cold Humboldt Current offshore. Summers (December–April) are sunny and warm; winters (June–October) are blanketed in garúa — a thick grey mist with drizzle that rarely lifts.

North Charleston is a major industrial and port city that is significantly different in character from the historic Charleston peninsula. Inland from the sea breezes that moderate historic Charleston, this city experiences more extreme heat in summer. The Boeing Dreamliner plant and port facilities create industrial heat islands.
