Desert — unique foggy grey winters, warm sunny summers, almost no rain

Lima has the world's most paradoxical coastal desert climate. Despite being a tropical latitude, it rarely gets rain due to the cold Humboldt Current offshore. Summers (December–April) are sunny and warm; winters (June–October) are blanketed in garúa — a thick grey mist with drizzle that rarely lifts.

San Jose at the southern end of San Francisco Bay has a warm Mediterranean climate that is sunnier and warmer than the coast. The mountains to the east and west create a valley setting that warms significantly in summer. The Bay moderates extremes but San Jose sees more heat days than San Francisco and less coastal fog.
