Lima has the world's most paradoxical coastal desert climate. Despite being a tropical latitude, it rarely gets rain due to the cold Humboldt Current offshore. Summers (December–April) are sunny and warm; winters (June–October) are blanketed in garúa — a thick grey mist with drizzle that rarely lifts.

Scranton in the Wyoming Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania has a humid continental climate influenced by the Pocono Mountains. The valley position creates cold air pooling in winter while the mountains above can receive significantly more snow. The city's mining history has created complex underground terrain that influences surface drainage and settlement.
