Lima has the world's most paradoxical coastal desert climate. Despite being a tropical latitude, it rarely gets rain due to the cold Humboldt Current offshore. Summers (December–April) are sunny and warm; winters (June–October) are blanketed in garúa — a thick grey mist with drizzle that rarely lifts.

Vancouver Washington (not Canada) sits across the Columbia River from Portland, sharing its Willamette Valley climate but with some differences from the river position. The Columbia creates a weather boundary and occasional east winds from the Gorge can be extreme. Vancouver benefits from Oregon's outdoor-focused culture while avoiding Oregon's income tax.
