Midland in the Permian Basin of West Texas is the petroleum capital of America. The flat, treeless Permian Basin has an extreme semi-arid climate with intense summer heat and significant wind year-round. Dust storms are frequent and the city sits at 2,779 feet with dry air that makes 100°F temperatures somewhat more bearable than humid East Texas.

San Francisco's climate is shaped by its position on a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. The coastal fog (Karl the Fog) rolls in through the Golden Gate each summer afternoon, keeping temperatures mild year-round. The city has dramatically different microclimates — the Sunset District fog-bound while the Mission basks in sun on the same day.
