Norfolk on Hampton Roads harbor is home to the world's largest naval base and has one of the US's most serious sea level rise challenges. The city regularly floods even in sunny weather from storm surge and higher king tides — a consequence of sea level rise on the Mid-Atlantic coast. The massive harbor creates maritime influence year-round.

San Francisco's climate is shaped by its position on a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. The coastal fog (Karl the Fog) rolls in through the Golden Gate each summer afternoon, keeping temperatures mild year-round. The city has dramatically different microclimates — the Sunset District fog-bound while the Mission basks in sun on the same day.
