Lisbon's climate is shaped by its position on the north bank of the wide Tagus estuary and its famously hilly terrain — seven main hills create dramatic elevation differences across short distances. The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, but the Tagus estuary acts as a massive thermal regulator, channeling Atlantic breezes deep into the urban core. Coastal fog, locally known as 'cacimbo,' frequently rolls in from the Atlantic, particularly affecting western and riverside districts while hilltop neighborhoods bask in sunshine above the marine layer.
