Barcelona's Mediterranean climate delivers hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters shaped by its position between the Pyrenees, the Collserola hills, and the Mediterranean Sea. The sea breeze (marinada) arrives reliably each summer afternoon, cooling the coast by 5–8°C while the inland upper neighborhoods retain heat. The Collserola ridge to the northwest blocks cold tramuntana winds while the city's gridded Eixample blocks create intense summer heat islands in the urban center.
