The Grunewald forest is Berlin's primary fresh-air generator, producing cool and oxygen-rich air that flows eastward into the inner city through green corridors. Residential areas adjacent to the forest experience summer temperatures 5–7°C below inner-city peaks, but the tree canopy and sandy soils also create higher humidity and more frequent ground frost in winter.
