Charlotte is the banking capital of the South, rapidly growing into a major metropolitan area. The Piedmont location at 750 feet gives it milder summers than coastal plains cities but still hot and humid. The city's dramatic development boom since the 1970s has created significant urban heat island effects. Ice storms from the Gulf winter are Charlotte's signature weather threat.
