Fort Smith sits on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border at the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers. The city has a more continental climate than eastern Arkansas, with hotter and drier summers. Its river valley location means significant flooding risk and high humidity, while the Ozark foothills to the north bring occasional winter ice.
