Fresno in the Central Valley is one of California's hottest and most air-polluted cities. Surrounded by the Sierra Nevada to the east and the Coast Ranges to the west, the valley traps both heat and smog. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 105°F and winter tule fog can persist for weeks blocking sunlight.
