Sai Kung's deeply indented coastline and surrounding country park hills make it one of Hong Kong's most weather-variable districts, with dramatic differences between sheltered inner harbours and exposed headlands just kilometres apart. The volcanic geology and dense forest cover keep temperatures noticeably cooler than the urban core, and the area receives some of Hong Kong's highest annual rainfall totals due to orographic uplift of moist maritime air.
