Tung Chung sits on Lantau Island's north coast beneath Ngong Ping plateau, where cold katabatic winds drain off the 934m Lantau Peak on clear winter nights, producing some of the territory's lowest urban temperatures. The district's coastal reclamation and proximity to the airport's open runway area expose it to strong, unobstructed southwest monsoon winds in summer.
