Emmarentia benefits from the substantial cooling effect of the Johannesburg Botanical Garden and Emmarentia Dam, which together form one of the city's largest contiguous green and water surfaces. Cold air drainage from the adjacent Melville Koppies ridge pools around the dam on still winter mornings, making this one of the coldest frost pockets in the northern suburbs.
