New Town (Rajarhat) is Kolkata's newest satellite township, built on former wetlands and paddy fields at the city's eastern fringe. The open landscape and lower building density reduce the urban heat island effect, but the surrounding water bodies and remnant marshes push relative humidity 5–10% higher than the city core during pre-monsoon months.
