Mumbai's tropical maritime climate is defined by its peninsular geography — a narrow strip of reclaimed land flanked by the Arabian Sea to the west and Thane Creek to the east. The city experiences intense monsoon rainfall from June to September, with western-facing neighborhoods receiving significantly more precipitation due to direct exposure to moisture-laden onshore winds. Urban heat islands are extreme in the dense central districts, while coastal promenades and mangrove fringes provide localized cooling corridors.

Mumbai has one of the world's most dramatic monsoon seasons. The southwest monsoon (June–September) dumps enormous rainfall, regularly flooding the city. The dry season (November–February) is the time to visit with warm but manageable conditions.
