São Paulo's subtropical highland climate at 760 meters elevation gives it milder temperatures than coastal Brazilian cities, but the world's fourth-largest urban area has created an extreme urban heat island that raises city temperatures 5–10°C above surrounding rural areas. Summers are hot and wet with torrential afternoon downpours and flash flooding in low-lying areas, while winters are dry and cool with occasional cold fronts from the south. The city's explosive growth has replaced most natural vegetation, creating intense heat and poor ventilation.
