Alfama's labyrinthine medieval streets and tightly packed buildings on the south-facing slope below São Jorge Castle create deep shade but extremely poor ventilation. The steep terrain facing the Tagus captures direct morning sun and radiated heat from limestone walls, making it one of Lisbon's warmest neighborhoods on still summer nights.
