Vienna's climate sits at the crossroads of oceanic and continental influences, with the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) to the west acting as a natural barrier against Atlantic weather systems. The Danube River and its canal create cooling corridors through the city, while the flat Pannonian Plain to the east channels hot, dry air in summer and bitter cold winds in winter. Elevation differences between the western hillside vineyards and the low-lying eastern floodplains produce temperature variations of up to 5°C across the city.
